'Fresh Prince' actress slams Jada Pinkett Smith's Oscars boycott (The Hollywood Reporter)Janet Hubert is the latest celebrity to speak out about the #OscarsSoWhite controversy, but she is aiming her thoughts at two people in particular: Jada Pinkett and Will Smith. The actress, who co-starred alongside Smith for years on "The Fresh Prince of Bel Air" as Aunt Viv, posted an online video on Martin Luther King Jr. Day in response to Pinkett Smith's video announcing why she plans to boycott the 2016 Oscars.Referring to Pinkett Smith as "Miss Thing," Hubert opens her video by asking, "Does your man not have a mouth of his own with which to speak?" before launching into her thoughts on the controversy that has drawn so much attention (it even prompted the Academy to release a rare statement on Monday.) "I find it ironic that somebody who has made their living and has made millions and millions of dollars from the very people that you're talking about boycotting just because you didn't get a nomination, just because you didn't win?" said Hubert. "That's not the way life works, baby." She continued, "You ain't Barack and Michelle Obama. And y'all need to get over yourselves. You have a huge production company that you only produce your friends and family and yourself. So you are a part of Hollywood, you are part of the system that is unfair to other actors. So get real." Hubert then recalled how, when they were filming Fresh Prince years ago, she approached then-star Smith about banding together to ask the network for a cast-wide raise like the "white shows" do, like Friends. "Your response to me was 'my deal is my deal. And your deal is your deal,'" she says.

British actress Charlotte Rampling accuses Spike Lee of being 'racist to whites' over Oscars criticism

British actress Charlotte Rampling, nominated for a best actress Oscar this year, said Friday that black US director Spike Lee was "racist to whites" for his stance over this year's all-white nominations lineup."It's in the other direction, it's racist... to whites," Rampling, nominated for her role in Andrew Haigh's romantic drama "45 Years", told French radio."You can never know for sure, but maybe black actors did not deserve to be in the final selection," Rampling, 69, said in French on Europe 1 radio. She also rejected Lee's idea that the Academy Awards should have quotas to level the playing field for minorities in the Oscars chase. "Why classify people? We live in countries now where people are more or less accepted," she said. For a second year in a row, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences nominated only white actors for the 20 slots for Oscars, causing an outcry. Lee and his wife will be skipping the February 28 awards ceremony, though he has said he is not calling for a wider boycott. Will Smith and his wife Jada Pinkett Smith will also stay away. Lee, who won an Oscar last year honouring his lifetime achievements as a moviemaker, wrote an open letter to the academy Monday decrying the "lily white" acting nominations. He suggested the only way things would change is if the studios adopt a system akin to that used by the National Football League, which requires that minorities be interviewed when coach or executive positions open up. Even Academy president, Cheryl Boone Isaacs, said she was "both heartbroken and frustrated about the lack of inclusion".

Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences overhauls rules to promote diversity

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences has approved a sweeping series of substantive changes designed to make the Academy's membership, its governing bodies, and its voting members significantly more diverse. The Board's goal is to commit to doubling the number of women and diverse members of the Academy by 2020."The Academy is going to lead and not wait for the industry to catch up," said Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs. "These new measures regarding governance and voting will have an immediate impact and begin the process of significantly changing our membership composition." Beginning later this year, each new member's voting status will last 10 years, and will be renewed if that new member has been active in motion pictures during that decade. In addition, members will receive lifetime voting rights after three ten-year terms; or if they have won or been nominated for an Academy Award. We will apply these same standards retroactively to current members. In other words, if a current member has not been active in the last 10 years they can still qualify by meeting the other criteria. Those who do not qualify for active status will be moved to emeritus status. Emeritus members do not pay dues but enjoy all the privileges of membership, except voting. This will not affect voting for this year's Oscars. At the same time, the Academy will supplement the traditional process in which current members sponsor new members by launching an ambitious, global campaign to identify and recruit qualified new members who represent greater diversity. The decision was made at an emergency board meeting Thursday night. Academy honchos, including president Cheryl Boone Isaacs and CEO Dawn Hudson, opted not to wait for the regularly scheduled board meeting on Jan. 26. The changes were announced Friday morning. Also on Thursday, sources said the Academy met with ABC officials and reps of Chris Rock, confirming that he will host the Feb. 28 ceremony. Jada Pinkett Smith, Spike Lee and Will Smith said they will not attend. Some other activists had urged Rock to withdraw; he never addressed those directly, but insiders said he believes he can do more good by remaining, since the Academy Awards reach a worldwide audience. After worldwide media criticism over the Jan. 14 Oscar nominations, Academy officials knew they had to make some bold moves, and make them quickly. The image of the Oscars and the Academy were tarnished when the all-Caucasian lineup of 20 actors immediately led to bigger questions about the lack of diversity within the Academy - and ultimately within the industry. Nobody was asking for quotas or affirmative action; instead, the protests were angry at Hollywood's longtime failure to recognize racial and gender diversity in the country. The U.S. Census Bureau estimates that non-whites constitute nearly 40% of the population. Yet studio decision-makers are overwhelmingly white and male, which is reflected in their films and especially their awards hopefuls. Hudson and Boone Isaacs have helped champion a push to invite more diverse members; in June, the org announced invitations to a record 322 new members, representing a cross-section of the population. But with 6,261 voting members, the new additions apparently didn't make much of a dent. The Academy has 17 branches; actors nominate actors, editors nominate editors, and so on; the entire eligible membership votes on final Oscars. Four days after the Jan. 14 announcement of nominations, Boone Isaacs issued a statement saying there would be "dramatic steps to alter the makeup of our membership." She did not give details at the time.

Gay Latino Oscar Voter Pens Letter to Academy President: "Are You Saying I Am Racist?"

Mark Reina, a member of the Academy's executives branch, weighs in on the #OscarsSoWhite controversy and the response to it. This piece by Mark Reina, a member of the Academy's public relations branch who spent most of his career at Warner Bros., is part of an ongoing series of guest columns by Academy members about the #OscarsSoWhite controversy and the Academy's response to it. Some of my colleagues in the Academy thought people might be interested in the points I raised in the email I sent to Cheryl Boone Isaacs (below). I have not received a response. Dear Cheryl Boone Isaacs, I understand your need to respond to the criticism the Academy has recently received about the lack of diversity among the Oscar nominees. However, I am baffled at your and the board's choice of a response. I worked in the industry for over 20 years, most of that time as a film studio executive. Because of that, I am currently a full voting member of the Academy. Under the new rules it appears as though that right will be denied me in order to make the Academy and therefore the Oscar nominees "more diverse." Are you saying I am racist or have racist tendencies and need to be excluded from voting? Are you saying if I worked another 10 years I would vote differently? Are you saying that I have not made my voting choices on quality but rather on the color of the artists' skin? Are you saying that I have voted (consciously or unconsciously) to exclude women, members of the LGBT community and other minorities? I find it insulting and ignorant. I take my membership responsibilities seriously and am honored to be part of the Academy. I have paid my yearly dues, cast Oscar ballots each year, voted in categories only when I have seen all the films and consistently been involved in and voted on other AMPAS matters since I was invited to join in 1995. Snoop Dog weighs in... . I am a gay man and my father is a Latino immigrant. Please explain to me how denying me my right to vote makes the Academy membership and the Oscar nominees more diverse? Thank you in advance for your response. Mark Reina http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/race/gay-latino-oscar-voter-pens-859044

Filmmaker Spike Lee to stay away from Oscars over ongoing diversity row

In Hollywood they preparing for the Oscars - the movie industry's biggest night. But how much is all the work papering over the cracks of a world famous institution weakened by the ongoing row over the lack of diversity. Filmmaker Spike Lee, winner of an honourary Oscar won't be there taking in a ball game instead. His wife will also be absent. He stopped short of using the word "boycott" but his sentiments are shared by many stars though not everyone thinks staying away is the best form of protest, a point made by Gil Robertson, co-founder and President of the African American Film Critics Association "I don't think the right side is boycotting the Oscars. I think the Oscars is a well respected institution in the entertainment community," he said. But it is not just the Oscars which have a diversity problem. Women, minorities and the LGBT community are vastly under-represented throughout Hollywood failing to reflect the make up of the US population. That's according to a report from the University of Southern California. "Across the 414 films, television shows and digital series that we evaluated, over 20 percent didn't have one black or African American speaking character. Over 50 percent didn't feature one Asian or Asian American character. Across 11,306 speaking characters, across the entire study, only a third were girls and women and only 229 were LGBT," explained Professor Stacy L Smith, University of Southern California. Inequality spreads beyond colour and ethnicity. Last year Patricia Arquette, who won an Oscar as best actress in a supporting role pointed the finger at the gap in wages between men and women, another sensitive topic in Hollywood where actors are still paid more than actresses. "The Academy has been active for the last three, four years about including new and different voices, filmmakers, whether of gender or race or national origin. We felt it was important for the world to know that we are on this," stressed Cheryl Boone Isaacs, President Oscars Academy. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has promised to double the number of women and representatives from minorities in the organisation by the year 2020.

Boone County (Belvidere) IL Sergeant Accused of Harassment, Jury found guilty

BOONE COUNTY (WIFR) -- A jury has found a Boone County Sheriff's Sergeant guilty of harassment. 23 News Reporter Meghan Dwyer looked into the allegations. Anita Christensen, Accused Boone County Sergeant of Harassment, "He followed me from place to place that i went, he went and sat in front of my work places. he would tailgate me.""I was terrified of him." It all started in 1998..a beef between a Belvidere City cop and a County Deputy. But it turned into much more than that when the Deputy Ed Krieger began following his enemy's girlfriend all over town. "Their cars were marked with the badge number on the front fender on each side. Over the years I learned what he looked like, and what kind of car he drove. when he was working and when he wasn't working," Christensen said. Christensen filed complaints with the Boone County Sheriff's Department but got no response. Then she starting filing lawsuits. She didn't get anywhere until last month when a jury found Krieger guilty of harassing her. Despite the jury's verdict Krieger's attorney says he denies any wrongdoing. Because Boone County is such a small place there are only so many Sheriff's Deputies on the streets at any given time and anytime Christensen thinks she saw him, it was merely a coincidence. The jury found Krieger guilty but they didn't award Christensen any money. It's a verdict she says sends the wrong message. "They gave him the same message that the Sheriff's Department has been giving him for the last 10 years. it's okay. it was wrong for you to do it but there's no punishment," Christensen said. Calls to the Boone County Sheriff Duane Wirth were not returned. Christensen says she hasn't seen Krieger since the jury verdict came down. He was promoted to Sergeant in 2007. http://www.wifr.com/home/headlines/Boone_County_Sergeant_Accused_of_Harassment_148928925.html Note: Boone County is actually a big place. Its includes Caledonia, Popular Grove, Garden Prairie, Capron, Timberlane, and Belvidere.
